No One at the Controls:
We’re taught that life is about the journey, not the destination, but the lie is revealed when one is up against a deadline. Throughout my life my professional and academic goals have been hampered by ADHD, particularly when it comes to self-directed projects like this one. When given the freedom to focus on anything, I tend to focus on nothing, so I usually begin work on open prompts by self-imposing artificial themes or constraints. For this piece, though, I wanted to make use of the wandering and the chaos, of the act of play that is creation. The imagery is based solely on interest; I get an image or text in my head, I draw it until I become bored with it, then move on. Some are complete, some abandoned. It’s notebook marginalia, keeping a record of the real thoughts that cloud my attention.
